Gunilla Kroshus is the founder, co-owner, and head baker of the veteran-owned American Dream Cakes Bakery in Jacksonville, North Carolina. This bakery specializes in unique couture wedding cakes and custom cakes for all occasions.
Gunilla grew up baking besides her grandmother in Sweden and has since made her business' mission to "make life delicious!". She met her husband, Randy, in Yugoslavia while he was serving in the US Army. When they relocated to Jacksonville, Gunilla saw an opportunity to bring a bakery like no other to the community. Today, Gunilla bakes, volunteers and collaborates with local, regional and international charities, hosts interns from across the country, and has even mentored a Wounded Warrior so that he could return home and open a bakery of his own.
Today, American Dream Cake is a family-owned custom cake shop operated by Randy & Gunilla Kroshus. They specialize in unique couture wedding cakes and custom cakes for all occasions. The bakery also offers basic decorated cakes and edible photo cakes. All products are baked fresh on premises and the bakery is known for their not-too-sweet, home-made buttercream frosting. Though not a sit-down eatery, the bakery has multiple display cases filled with delicious grab’n’go items like gourmet cupcakes, tortes, cookies & more – made fresh each day.
Each December, American Dream Cakes uses a family recipe spanning 5 generations to make Swedish Gingerbread cookies (Saras Pepparkakor). While traditional American gingerbread cookies are thicker and often sweetened with molasses, Pepparkakor are thin, crisp and do not contain molasses. offer these delicious cookies in our bakery and at Christmas fairs around Eastern North Carolina. Various regional Christmas fairs, including Raleigh’s Scandinavian Christmas Fair allowing opportunities to sample or buy the cookies with friends or family.
